Two issues for the fire department were addressed by the Tioga city commission at their meeting last week.
The intersection at Welo and Front Street has become increasingly dangerous due to the high volume in traffic flow coupled with the emergency vehicle use. Besides the city fire and ambulance departments, the rural fire department dispatches from the two buildings at that location as well.
“Since Main Street turned into a one-way, all northbound traffic either comes on Welo or Benson,” explained fire department volunteer Nathan Germundson, “It’s like the Daytona 500 around that corner.”
Germundson reported that drivers tend to take the corner sharply, seldom slowing down to look for emergency vehicles leaving the building, resulting in recent near misses.
