Early last week, Crystal Smith of Tioga was preparing to embark on a trip to her native Washington state, for the trial of a man accused in the cold case murder of Smith’s father 35 years ago.
By Thursday, however, what had initially seemed to Smith the end of a lifelong search for justice was blocked by new developments in the case.
Smith learned her mother, who went by the name of Dawn Schober when she lived in Tioga, has been offered a plea deal in exchange for testimony that could convict Bernie Swaim, whose trial was to have begun today in Wenatchee, Wa.
Because of the deal, the prosecution is recommending a sentence of 5 years for Schober (who now goes by the last name Soles) for her role in the murder.
