Fire districts have been a boon to some departments

With all of the challenges community fire departments face, some have found a measure of salvation in forming a fire district -- at least financially.

Crosby and Noonan have volunteer fire departments. They respond to the same situations as fire protection districts.

“The districts contract with a department to provide services,” said Divide County Emergency Services Director Jody Gunlock. “But a district has a board that runs it.”

Crosby Fire Chief Lynn Nygaard said the members of the fire department make their own decisions about how to operate the department.
