Local sales tax revenues just got a proverbial “shot in the arm,” and retailers, along with economic development officials, are thrilled.
Last week by 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 1992 case and by doing so paves the way for states to begin collecting sales tax from online out-of-state retailers.
State Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger said the decision eliminates an unfair advantage.
“This will go a long way to ensure local businesses are on a level playing field with online retailers,” he said.
