Concordia Pack Rats put love in every baby bundle

Sewing machines whir, scissors click, irons hiss and the conversation is snappy.

On Mondays, in the basement of Concordia Lutheran Church, the Pack Rats are in full production mode. They’re a group of retired women who come together each week for what they call “fun.” On this particular day, Kay Unhjem is measuring fabric for baby quilts.

“I cut, I put in filler,” she says.

Marcia Lallum and Helen Lindsey are handling the sewing on their own machines that just happened to show up in the church basement.
