The challenger has defeated the incumbent in a write-in campaign for a Divide County School Board seat representing the Ambrose and Fortuna areas.
As-yet-unofficial tallies released by the Divide County School District on Wednesday morning indicate that Melissa Adams won the position that had belonged to Shari DeJardine. Both are Fortuna residents.
No names appeared on the ballot for that position, as neither DeJardine nor any other eligible resident filed. Separate advertisements in last week’s Journal for DeJardine and Adams urged voters to write them in for the position.
Adams received 110 write-in votes for the three-year term to serve District 3, and DeJardine had 15 votes.
Holly Krecklau, Stephanie Reistad and Shawn Sundberg, all incumbents, won their respective re-election bids after running unopposed.
Krecklau received 128 votes for her District 1 seat representing the rural Noonan area, against four write-in votes. Reistad received 126 votes for her rural at-large seat, against three write-in votes. Both will begin new three-year terms.
Sundberg received 128 votes, against two write-in votes, for the remaining year of the rural at-large seat to which the board appointed him last August.
The board must meet Monday to canvass the votes and declare the official results.
